The Strangely Possibles will kick off the Chocolate Church Arts Center’s outdoor summer shows in Waterfront Park. The Portland-based band will perform in Bath at 6 p.m., Saturday, July 8. Admission is free. The band  formed in Scarborough and have released four albums since 2007.

The Strangely Possibles’ music frequently defies easy categorization, though the band opts for “rockadelic.” “This World,” their debut record, has shades of dance club alongside hints of singer-songwriter, and incorporates harmonicas, wood blocks, guitars, and organs. Through the album’s amalgam of musical conventions, the band offers answers for unasked questions like, “What if Tom Waits discovered Bossa Nova?” and somehow pulls them off. 

Their sophomore album “Junkyard Stew” was called a “tasty stew of musical flavors from country to indie to blues” by the Portland Press Herald; the album displays even more variety than its predecessor, switching vocalists for different effects. The group’s generic flexibility ensures that in concert as much as in recordings, the Strangely Possibles give a dynamic and interesting performance.

The Strangely Possibles will inaugurate the Chocolate Church’s series On The Waterfront  in cooperation with the City of Bath and sponsored by Beale Street BBQ, The Hyde School, and First Federal Savings. Every Saturday through August 26, outdoor shows take advantage of Bath’s charming summer evenings along the Kennebec. Visitors enjoy dinner and explore local stores while listening to talented New England bands. People of all ages bring blankets or lawn chairs and pack snacks or bring dinner for an evening of live entertainment at no cost.

Although the Chocolate Church typically programs from their 1847 re-purposed church, this is the fourth summer for off-site concerts. The Summer Concert Series includes shows outside as well as on the mainstage. In the event of rain, the outdoor performances will be cancelled.
