Schrock and DaCosta in concert
When they first met, 12 years ago, in a small club in Lexington, Kentucky, Kate Schrock and Glen DaCosta knew that they were starting a musical conversation that would last for years. And indeed their intuition proved right. Over the past 12 years, Kate and Glen have been writing and recording and performing together both here in the U.S. and in Jamaica, West Indies, Glen's home country.
If his name rings a bell, it might be that you know his work with groundbreaking group, Zap Pow, or with the group Bob Marley and the Wailers. DaCosta's infectious saxophone melodies have graced much of classic and revolutionary Jamaican pop and reggae music.
Schrock is a South Bristol native whose travels have taken her to Europe, Africa, South America and all over the U.S. in the past few decades as a DIY singer/songwriter performer. You can hear her work on local radio, WCLZ or “in Tune by 10” on MPBN, WERU and WMPG.
Schrock and DaCosta have recently formed a duo, Schrock and DaCosta with Kate on piano and vocals and Glen on saxophone, flute and vocals, and have been touring regionally.
Their set list includes favorites from Kate's 2007 release, “invocation,” which features DaCosta throughout, as well as DaCosta originals, some co-compositions and some surprise covers.
Their show also incorporates frequent banter and a space for Glen to share whatever might be on his mind — with participation from the audience. What can come out of Glen's mouth varies from night to night - from first hand experience of historical events or even the “ask Glen” segment of the show, where audience participation is encouraged.
"It's a soulful show with a lot of humor at times," Schrock said. "Glen and I both have a lot of jazz improv background and a lot of stage time. We start with a forgiveness ceremony and then free ourselves to take the audience anywhere we all need to go.”
Get your tickets now. It's the last show before DaCosta returns to Jamaica for the winter.
