Smoky stove pipe, but no home fire in Alna
A reported mobile home fire in Alna January 17 turned out to be the kind of fire call Assistant Alna Fire Chief Roger Whitney said he is happy to get: the kind that turn out to be no fire at all.
“I love it. I'll take this any day of the week,” Whitney said, minutes after the department's trucks headed away from the home at 1301 Alna Road (Route 218). Whitney was at work at Wiscasset Middle School when Lincoln County dispatchers called out the Alna department and then ones in neighboring towns.
Wiscasset, Newcastle and Jefferson firefighters were on the way with trucks to help, but were turned around, Whitney said. It’s standard procedure to call out other departments for mutual aid when a structure fire has been reported, he said.
At about 10:30 a.m. Friday, a passer-by saw what looked like smoke coming out the front of the home, Whitney said.
A pellet stove's outside stove pipe was apparently sooty and got smoky, he said. There were no flames, but the pipe's location near a door to the home probably made it look like the home was on fire, he said.
