Stable Gallery’s June show is creatively diverse
Where would you find a hand carved pileated woodpecker, finely woven wool rugs, and an installation of drawings evoking the natural world of Maine? Only at the June exhibition of the Stable Gallery in Damariscotta.
Starting with an Opening Reception on Friday, June 10 from 5-7 p.m., the Stable Gallery’s month long exhibit is titled “Over the Line.” Let your imagination consider the many images and sculptures that can be created “over the line,” depending on where the line is drawn and what it means.
Roz Welsh has created an installation that envelops a room from floor to ceiling in drawings. With rocks and sand plus drawing tools, the installation offers viewers an opportunity to view Welsh’s creative process as well as participate in their own. Titled the “Drawing Room,” Welsh said, “this installation has inspired paintings made and yet to come.”
Each month’s exhibit highlights several Stable Gallery artists in the main gallery. For June, these artists include seven returning gallery members and two new for 2016.
Bill Bellows weaves one-of-a-kind wool rugs with striking, two-toned patterns for floor or wall. His work evokes beauty and usability.
Caroline Davis’s latest paintings of animals catch viewers’ eyes and spirit with her animals’ expressions. Whether a rabbit, fox, or rat, all draw the viewer in with a chuckle.
Penelope Moodey paints natural scenes with a looseness of touch and soft colors that transport the viewer to a distant world.
Bob Thomas also evokes a special world in his painting series titled “Altered Grounds”. Using acrylic paints, Bob works the paint surface into a three dimensional display of harmonious colors.
Brandon Lutterman creates large ceramic forms as “an ongoing investigation of form, balance, texture, shape, line, space and color.” Brandon’s work spans the spectrum from realism to abstraction.
Ruthanne Harrison is a mixed media artist. The work she has chosen to display is a study on transformations in cities, time, space, and relationships.
The pileated woodpecker along with other amazingly detailed birds are the work of Ed Hawkes. Each bird is a “labor of love” requiring multiple tools, phases, and layers of color washes to create a realistic rendition of feathers in wood.
Charlie Durfee offers wood furniture to enhance any living space with elegance.
Finally, Susan Perrine creates artistic statements using mixed sourced elements from twigs and wool to children’s books. Come see for yourself her baby’s shirt made of colorful coffee bags.
The Stable Gallery, located in a Victorian stable at 26 Water Street in Damariscotta, hosts the work of 40 artists. The gallery is open 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. daily with extended hours on the second Friday of the month for the opening reception and third Fridays for the Damariscotta Art Walk.
