Talk planned on St. Philip’s architecture
The historic architecture of St. Philip’s Episcopal Church in Wiscasset will be the subject of one of several tours offered at the church open house, Sunday, May 15, 2-4 p.m. The public is invited to stop by to learn more about the history of the church and the spiritual life and work of today’s St. Philip’s community. All are welcome! The Rev. Thomas E. Junkert, priest in charge, will be on hand along with members of the congregation – and refreshments, served outdoors.
Artist and architectural historian Seaver Leslie will highlight the church’s interior and exterior design features. The building, originally a Baptist meetinghouse, will be 200 years old on June 5. A group of Episcopalians bought it in 1856 and hired renowned New England architect Francis H. Fassett to renovate it in the Gothic style. Fassett’s design is still largely intact.
Visitors can also learn about and hear the E. M. Skinner organ, installed in 1918 and built by one of the great organ makers in the world at the time. Other Skinner organs include those in St. Luke’s Cathedral in Portland, the Cathedral of St. John the Divine in Manhattan, and Yale University. Organist Terry Heller will talk about the instrument and fill the air with music.
