Considering the position you are running for, what do you feel are the three most pressing issues? (350 words or less)
I joined the Selectboard in Boothbay Harbor because I believe it is important to be involved and give back when one can. I have enjoyed my role as a civil servant and know I can make an impact in Augusta.
As a parent and graduate of the local school system, I am deeply concerned about education. There is tremendous opportunity to spend the money we have in a different way. Maine faces significant workforce challenges and especially in the trades. Creating more STEM and STEAM programs would better prepare our students for today’s job market. Having stronger technical vocational curriculum at the high school level would support students who may not want to go to college but enter the MAINE job market upon graduation.
Having available, affordable housing is a complex, statewide challenge with no single solution and many potential solutions rely on private/public partnerships as well as local planning. The state has received billions in incremental federal money, much of it with very specific “strings” attached. I would like to find ways to deploy some of that funding towards local infrastructure projects like water and sewer service expansion and road upgrades that support new or improved housing stock.
Our fishing industry is our way of life and we are in crisis; 90% risk reduction equals the elimination of our fishing industry and decimation of Maine’s economy. Every elected official has a moral responsibility to protect and support our fishing communities. When elected, I promise to do everything in my power to represent the interests of our fishing men and women.
I am deeply concerned by the upcoming winter and economic hardships facing everyday Mainers. The cost of petroleum is driving runaway inflation across everything with no end in sight. As a stop-gap, the state should decrease or suspend petroleum taxes in order to support every Mainer over the upcoming winter months. When these taxes are reinstated, we need to be sure that every Mainer in this state pays their fair share of the tax roll that funds our department of transportation costs and this will need to include EV vehicles.
Any other thoughts on why you are running or what you can bring to the office? (150 words or less)
I am a hard-working, committed, practical member of the community who wants to tackle the many challenges facing our State. I will listen to all, work across the aisle but hold my ground and do right by my constituents. I appreciate your vote of support on Nov. 8.
