Windjammer Days, part 3
This will be the last of my Windjammer Days columns for this year. But, I figured since I shared an aerial from the early ’80s, then a photo from 2017, it might be nice to finish up with a view from this year’s event.
Angelique is interesting. Her red-brown sails are quite outstanding in the sea of white. I have always liked the way those red sails stand out and blend with much of our green coast. It makes for an interesting contrast especially when Angelique meanders through a less open ocean among islands and shoreline cottages.
We went out with Mark Stover again this year and as usual had a wonderful time. My wife was even able to join us which has only happened once before. Other guests seemed to enjoy the trip as well, even small children. Mark even tried a couple of my peanut butter and jelly sandwiches on white bread rolls. They are especially tasty when the grape jelly soaks into the bread. Sort of reminds me of my “Twinkie” days! Oops, I know that is dietarily incorrect. I bought a “Twinkie” many years ago when there was mention of the delicacy’s demise. It’s still in a kitchen cabinet in perfect form. Well preserved! No hint of spoiling. And why would it? Have you ever explored the ingredients? My peanut butter and jelly sandwich sounds pretty tame by comparison.
Anyway! We were out around Burnt Island Light and I noticed Angelique making a break for it just inside Mouse and alongside the south shore of Juniper Point. I think Heritage had led the way only minutes before. It was fun to slide up behind Angelique passing by my old friend George Pew’s cottage. Over the years I had always enjoyed my time with the Pew family, the Nickles and “The Fez,” I think I even glimpsed a view of Mr. Fez lounging discreetly aboard his yacht near Harbor Island. He did respond with a wave and a gesture. He seldom wears a shirt! George Pew, for many years, was a member of the Coast Guard Auxiliary, patrolling the Harbor in Dragon Lady. I miss him and the Dragon as well. We had some fun visits.
The weather was very nice. For many of the past Windjammer Days the weather was far from ideal, with fog, sometimes rain and often overcast. Pointed the right way on the water, the sky was bright blue with hints of overcast working in. Off shore there was quite a bit of haze but once we got up inside the Harbor, amidst the many boats, compositions were more available that excluded much sky. The breeze was light but many of the smaller sailboats had plenty of wind and breezed by us from all directions, adding to the enjoyment. All things considered, it was a lovely trip. Thank you once again Captain Mark and guests for an enjoyable cruise.
Mark liked my PB and J sandwiches and said we could come back again anytime even without sandwiches. I think next time I will use strawberry jam instead of grape jelly. The grape jelly kind of squished out the other end of each bite causing some spills on the instrument cluster at the helm! I think strawberry jam may be stickier!
