Wiscasset renews license for Big Al’s Fireworks Outlet
The Wiscasset Select Board unanimously renewed a license for the sale of consumer fireworks for Big Al’s Fireworks Outlet on Route 1 when they met via Zoom Tuesday night, Dec. 15.
The application was made by Big Al’s Outlet owner Allen Cohen, who operates the fireworks outlet next door to his store at 300 Bath Road.
“Tonight’s discussion has absolutely nothing to do with the facility on JB’s Way,” said Selectmen’s Chair Pam Dunning, referring to a separate fireworks storage facility Cohen owns. The board declined to hear comments concerning that storage facility from an attorney representing a Wiscasset couple.
In his written report to the board, Town Manager Dennis Simmons stated Aurel Marks has joined Wiscasset EMS as full-time deputy director. Marks is a licensed paramedic and previously worked as a supervisor for Waldoboro EMS. Scott Getchell was hired as a full-time officer for Wiscasset Police Department. Getchell worked as a reserve officer for the department and full-time for Two Bridges Regional Jail in Wiscasset. And Simmons said Molly Bonang applied for and has been transferred to finance clerk at the town office. Bonang will continue performing her duties as tax collector until that job is filled, stated Simmons.
Terry Heller of Morton Street was reappointed to the committee on the appearance of the town, formerly known as the town’s beautification committee.
Longtime town employee Steve Christiansen of Willow Lane submitted his resignation from the public works department effective Dec. 18. The board wished Christiansen well in his retirement, accepting his resignation “with deep regret and best wishes in his future endeavors.” Selectman Jeff Slack thanked Christiansen for having served on the advisory committee on the downtown project.
The board announced Dec. 24 and Dec. 31 as paid holidays for town employees. The town has received a letter of thanks from Good Shepard Food Bank for a recent $2,000 donation voters approved at the annual town election.
The board set aside Tuesday, Jan. 26 for a joint meeting with the Wiscasset School Committee. No start time was set.
