Registration open for FARMS at the CLC Y specialty adult classes
Specialty adult classes at the FARMS at the Y kitchen at Central Lincoln County (CLC) YMCA are open for registration for December. Only twelve spots are available per class, so early registration is encouraged.
Returning guest chef and baker, Bill Babb, will once again be offering his popular Sourdough Class, but this will be his first time hosting his class at CLC Y. On Dec. 1 from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m., Babb will teach participants how to make a tasty, nutritious loaf of sourdough bread, as well as how to care for a sourdough starter, how to knead using two different techniques, and how to mix, shape and slice bread for baking. Babb will demonstrate two ways to bake, using a cloche and steaming the oven. Participants also will get to take home some sourdough culture (with a long history), and prepare a loaf to bake at home. Family members $23, members $25, and nonmembers $45 (scholarships available).
John Arbuckle, a 9th-generation farmer, will debut his Locally Raised Pork Cooking class on Dec. 6 from 5 to 7 p.m. John will be talking about his pasture-raised pigs and how to cook a nourishing dish with pork. He will cover various cuts of meat and how best to prepare them. Family members $23, members $25, and nonmembers $45 (scholarships available).
On Saturday, Dec. 8 from 8 to 10 a.m., a Healthy Cooking for Single Parents class will be offered at no cost to qualifying participants. Parents will learn how to cook tasty, nutritious meals for the family while working within a limited budget and schedule. Older children are welcome to join the class, but childcare is also available through the Child Watch program at this time. There is no fee for this class.
Coming right up on Nov. 15, FARMS at the Y will be hosting their first Farm-to-Table Community Lunch open to all members of the community. Participants can choose from two options: Cook & Dine for $5 (11 a.m.-1 p.m.), as they will also help prepare the meal or Dine Only for $10 (noon).
As the holidays approach, gifting a cooking class to an entire classroom can be an educational and engaging teacher or student gift. To gift a 2-hour cooking class to a school, teacher or student, the cost is $45. Gift certificates for this can be purchased at Central Lincoln County YMCA.
