Registration open for KELT’s nature day camp
The Kennebec Estuary Land Trust (KELT) invites kids 6 to 12 years old to a week of nature-day camp. Set along the shores of Sewall Pond in Arrowsic, KELT Kids Summer Day Camp has two sessions happening the weeks of July 15-19 and August 12-16 for kids 6 to 12 years old. Campers will spend their day outside exploring the wonders of the Kennebec Estuary and engaging in hands-on experiments, imaginative art projects, active games, and thoughtful discussion alongside KELT’s dedicated educational staff.
Camp runs 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. daily during each five day session and costs $160 for current KELT members and $190 for non-members. Partial camp scholarships are available. The registration deadlines are Sunday, July 7 for the July session and Sunday, August 4 for the August session. Visit www.kennebecestuary.org/summer-camp for additional details, scholarship information, and registration materials.
KELT is pleased to partner with the Maine TREE Foundation to host camp at the Holt Research Forest’s outdoor classroom in Arrowsic. The rustic open-air learning space boasts a partially-walled pavilion, Amish outhouse, gravel parking area, walking trails, and ample access to the woods and shoreline. Each camp week may include an off-site field trip to a coastal location, an opportunity to paddle board on Sewall Pond, and guest speakers like local naturalists and environmental professionals.
Last summer’s campers participated in a variety of activities such as scooping pond critters, dissecting decomposing logs, learning tree and animal identification, and geocaching.
For the second year, the camp will be coordinated by KELT’s Program Director, Becky Kolak, and Summer Program Steward, Hannah Bonine. Kolak facilitates the land trust’s educational programs for students, adults, and families year round. Bonine’s 13 years as a Girl Scout instilled a love for nature and she was a camp counselor for multiple years at other summer camps for the Girl Scouts and the Bath YMCA.
