New show by Jefferson artist at BRAF
The Boothbay Region Art Foundation (BRAF) presents Jefferson-based artist Carol Wiley’s solo show, “The Shapes of Our Lives.” This exhibit, hung in the upstairs Harbor View Gallery, runs from Aug. 28 to Oct. 15.
Said Wiley of her work, “As I gain maturity as an artist I find myself feeling freer to use a variety of media to explore color relationships, interesting shapes, and linear movement without restriction and to tell my story. Of these explorations, color is by far my favorite. I enjoy experimenting with pushing color beyond reality, always thinking about color relationships. I am fascinated by the infinite possibilities for putting paint to surface, always learning more each time I approach the easel.”
In her recent work, Wiley further explored the idea of shapes by paying closer attention to both negative and positive space, breaking images into smaller shapes, and looking at varied ways of painting the same subject. This searching has expanded her perception and the results are intriguing forays into spacial exploration using figures, landscapes and still life.
Most of the paintings in this show are new, created while the artist was sheltering in place this spring-early summer.
Carol Wiley’s home/studio gallery is on Spruce Meadow Road. For more about the artist, visit www.carolwileystudio.com
