Westport Island sets June elections, town meeting
Westport Island voters will elect a selectman and two school board members June 8 and have town meeting June 19. Selectmen set the dates Monday night.
Town Clerk Julie Casson said the second selectman’s seat and one of the seats on Sheepscot Valley Regional School Unit’s board are for three years; the other SVRSU opening is for the last two years of an unexpired three-year term. Officials timed the elections with SVRSU’s budget vote.
According to an email Casson sent selectmen, nomination papers would be available starting March 1 and be due April 9. In that email and one to reporters, Casson explained no one ran last year for the SVRSU seat Susan Stires had held; appointee Mary Coventry has been serving as an interim member until an election is held, Casson wrote.
Selectmen set town meeting for 9 a.m. June 19 at town hall. First Selectman George Richardson said “there is probably a real possibility” of an item involving the town accepting credit cards. Staff are researching it. “We’re waiting to see what works best and what the costs are, and if are there costs ... it may have to be” a warrant article, Casson said. “We’re still exploring.”
The look follows a resident’s request, Casson said.
Also in Monday’s UberConference call, selectmen agreed to pay CAI Technologies of New Hampshire $600 for the tax map update. Richardson said he negotiated the sum down from a proposed $1,000.
Selectmen meet next via UberConference at 7 p.m. Monday, Feb. 8. They do not plan to meet on Presidents Day, Feb. 15.
