Old Glory flies once more at town office
Westport Island town office’s American flag is back flying for the first time in at least five years, Deputy Municipal Agent Gaye Wagner said. In Monday night’s UberConference call selectmen’s meeting and an email afterward, Wagner described a group effort to raise the flag.
“The halyard was broken, and the pole is steel and very heavy. Those previously asked about a fix said special equipment was needed to fix the pole in place,” Wagner wrote. “Westport Island resident Bill Miller was determined that the flag would fly once again and enlisted his friend Stephen Coombs from Massachusetts to make it happen. They, in turn, enlisted 10-year old onlooker Jacob Carver to assist. Jacob helped lift the pole and was the first to foist the flag to return (it) to duty over the town office.”
“It was quite a job,” First Selectman George Richardson Jr. said. A card of thanks was planned.
Also Monday, selectmen went with the state’s $53.93 per ton bid on salt. Last year, the town paid $54.50 a ton, also through the state, Richardson said. “I don’t think we can beat it ... The last time we (did not go with) the state, we paid $77 a ton.” The board kept X Copy of Portland as the annual town report’s printer, for $859.18 for 300 copies with color on the front and back.
Early voting in-person at the town office starts Tuesday, May 11 for the June 8 town elections and Sheepscot Valley Regional School Unit budget, Wagner and Town Clerk Julie Casson said. They said people may also call, but not email, the town office to request absentee ballots. Bailey Bartlett and Jeff Tarbox are each seeking to become second selectman, a three-year term. Mary Coventry is unopposed for a three-year term on the SVRSU board. And no one filed papers for a two-year term on the SVRSU board, Casson has said.
This being Municipal Clerks Week, Richardson thanked Casson, Wagner, Municipal Agent Dedee Greenleaf-Hodgdon and Tax Collector-Treasurer Martha Hayward for “all the good work that they do for the town of Westport Island and also for the selectmen.”
“I agree,” Second Selectman Gerald Bodmer said.
