Lina Burley show ‘Reflections of Maine’ at BRAF
A selection of Lina Burley’s works, in both oil and watercolor, will be on exhibit in Gallery One at the Boothbay Region Art Gallery (BRAF) from July 28 through Aug. 30.
Lina Burley (1922-2005) was a well-known artist residing in East Boothbay. She served two terms as president of BRAF and served as a Director of the Maine Art Gallery in Wiscasset in addition to her outreach efforts to bring young Maine-based artists into the National Association of Woman Artists. In the words of one fellow artist, her work is “second to none in expressing the sheer bigness and power of the sea in its eternal confrontation with the land.”
In her own words, “Living on the coast of Maine, surrounded by the beauty of the landscape and the alternate turmoil and quietness of the sea, I have for many years been dedicated to painting these natural forms, simplifying and alternating the natural scenery in an attempt to capture the atmosphere and essence of this special place.”
Lina Burley studied at the Art Student’s League in New York with George Grosz, Edwin Dickinson and Seong Moy.
She received many awards including the Farnsworth Museum’s Juried Annual First honorable mention and the National Association of Women’s medal of Honor for water media. Two of her works reside in the permanent collection of the Portland Museum of Art.
Boothbay Region Art Foundation is at 1 Townsend Ave. in Boothbay Harbor. The gallery is open 10 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. Monday-Saturday, and 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Sunday.
