The Exhibition on Screen popular art film series continues in January with “The Danish Collector: Delacroix to Gauguin.” The film shows on Friday, Jan. 21 at 2 p.m. (one show only). Tickets are $10 for adults, $8 for members.

William Hansen, a Danish businessman, amassed a superb collection of French 19th century art at his estate, Ordupgaard, outside Copenhagen, during the dark days of World War I. “The Danish Collector” tells his fascinating story and, with exclusive access to a sell-out exhibition at London’s Royal Academy, brings the extraordinary collection to the big screen. From Hansen’s beautiful house and gardens at Ordrupgaard to the streets of bohemian Paris, this film takes you on a journey to discover some of the best examples of 19th-century French art ever collected, including works by Corot, Delacroix, Courbet, Monet, Pissarro, Cezanne, Degas, Manet and Gauguin.

Director David Bickerstaff went to Ordrupgaard to interview its curators – and a leading Danish artist- who offered invaluable details into Hansen’s dynamic life and the collection’s historic presence. While there are many giants of the collecting world (Barnes, Courtauld, Getty) this film focuses on a lesser-known personality but one who created a collection that encapsulated a passion for acquiring art and leaving it to future generations.
