Lincoln Theater brings Moscow's Bolshoi Ballet to Damariscotta
The Bolshoi Ballet is back! Lincoln Theater is bringing three spectacular ballets, captured live in Moscow, right to our community living room here in the heart of Damariscotta. Bolshoi Ballet, the legendary Russian company, offers dance lovers the opportunity to experience their most iconic shows on the big screen, and is kicking off 2022 with George Balanchine’s sparkling “Jewels,” which will screen for one showing only at Lincoln Theater Saturday, Feb. 19 at 1 p.m.
“Jewels,” the glamorous tryptich, was inspired by choreographer George Balanchine’s visit to the famous jeweler Van Cleef & Arpels on New York’s Fifth Avenue and forged his unique style of abstract ballet. An homage to the cities and dance schools that made a vital impact on the revered choreographer’s career, with “Emeralds” for Paris, honoring the France of elegance, romance, and grace, “Rubies” for fast-paced and witty New York, representing the collaboration between Stravinsky and Balanchine, and culminating in the elegant “Diamonds” for St. Petersburg an airy tribute to the virtuosity of classical Russian dancers. “Jewels” is the first of three ballets being presented on the big screen between now and June at Lincoln Theater, all captured live from the Bolshoi Ballet’s Historic Stage in Moscow.
And mark your calendars for the captivating “Swan Lake,” ravishing audiences on Saturday, March 19. The legend of the enigmatic swan-woman set to Tchaikovsky’s masterpiece of a score is ballet’s most beloved production in the classical canon, exemplifying the dramatic tension and heart stopping beauty of motion with prima ballerina Olga Smirnova leading the cast, as sensational as the black swan as she is poignant as white swan.
And later this spring, the monumental production of “The Pharaoh’s Daughter” hits the big screen Saturday, June 11. French choreographer Pierre Lacotte brilliantly resurrected Marius Petipa’s forgotten masterpiece exclusively for the Bolshoi Ballet nearly 20 years ago. With its exotic setting, spectacular dancing and scenes choreographed for nearly the entire Bolshoi troupe, this stunning Egyptian fresco is one of the most remarkable productions in the company’s repertoire.
