“Frida Kahlo” – Exhibition on Screen - (NR; 90 minutes) - Who was Frida Kahlo? We may have heard about the artist as a global icon, but now we have a chance to discover the woman behind the bright colors, the big brows, and the floral crowns? Director Ali Ray traveled to Kahlo’s home, “The Blue House,” in Mexico City to unravel the truth about her turbulent life. With access to her personal letters, he discovered how her fragilities and insecurities were processed through the act of painting. It was how she interpreted the world, her politics, passions and emotions, and transformed them into images of strength, defiance and understanding. This personal and intimate film offers privileged access to her works, and highlights the source of her feverish creativity, her resilience, and her unmatched lust for life, politics, and love. “Lunana: A Yak in the Classroom” – (NR;1 hour 49 minutes) - Here is the story of Ugyen, a young teacher in the modern capital of Bhutan who shirks his duties while planning his trip to Australia to become a singer. As a reprimand, his superiors send him to the most remote school in the world, in a village called Lunana, to complete his service. There he finds no electricity, no textbooks, not even a blackboard, only a small room where a Yak is tethered (no other place for a school). Only his ability to sing helps him win over his young eager students. He wants to quit... but he begins to learn of the hardship in the lives of these beautiful children and is won over by the amazing spiritual strength of the villagers and the untouched natural beauty of the Himalayan glacier where they live.
