Christine Covert’s new work in solo show
River Arts in Damariscotta presents all new work by Christine Covert of Warren, Maine April 8 through 27. This one woman, multi-media show, “Bound by Yellow,” is a vibrant show of painting and collage. On Saturday, April 9, Covert will be in the River Room gallery for an artist’s reception where she will greet visitors from 2 to 4 p.m.
Covert was brought up during the exciting and turbulent 1950s and 60s in the Greater Boston area in a family that prized education. Although her parents preferred her to exercise her intelligence by becoming a “professional,” she always bent towards the arts. Artistically creative and deft with her hands, she always drew and painted. To support herself, Covert became a production potter and a fine hand bookbinder, where she achieved the level of journeyman. She also practiced the crafts of basketry and quilting, and ran an import business buying and selling African fabrics.
In her first foray into abstract painting, Covert has created a bold body of work using acrylic paint, collage and mixed media. The results are engaging and demonstrate a coherent understanding of color, value, form and composition arranged intuitively. Most of these are strong on geometrics, flat colors, and clean edges.
Other works demonstrate Covert’s continuing fascination with human interaction in casual groupings and invite viewers to ask and answer their own questions about what may be depicted. Covert’s gentle collages accompany these dreamy images and seem to similarly arise from the unexplained subconscious.
River Arts is located at 36 Elm St., Damariscotta. The gallery hours are Tuesday through Saturday 10 a.m.-4 p.m. For more information call the gallery at 207-563-6868 or visit riverartsme.org.
