Second Congregational Church to celebrate the ministry and spiritual gift of Jane Wilmot
The Sunday, Oct. 30 service at the Second Congregational Church, UCC in Newcastle will celebrate the ministry of Jane Wilmot who is retiring.
Jane’s 20 years of service at Second Cong included two years as an interim, and beginning in November 2004 as settled minister of music, director of choirs, and organist. During this time Jane directed a children’s choir, the Tower Ringer’s Handbell Choir, and an adult choir. Additionally, she organized and directed an Ecumenical Choir Festival with other choirs in town (the Handbell Choir has been open to community participation since its inception). Jane also directed the Coastal Chorale (now disbanded) for 10 years.
Before moving to the Midcoast area in November of 2001 with her husband, George, she was director of music ministries for 23 years at the First Congregational Church in Ridgefield, Connecticut. There, she directed multiple choir programs including six choirs and a concert series. Previously, Jane served churches in Georgia, Pennsylvania, Michigan, and Illinois. Her first organist position was with Roswell Presbyterian Church, in Roswell Georgia while still a college student.
Jane and George vacationed on the Midcoast for 20 years before building in Chamberlain.
Asked for her reflections on her remarkable career, Jane said, “I can’t remember when I wasn’t making music, singing, and playing piano with with my family. I performed throughout high school and college. I began playing organ in high school.” She was always committed to using music as a spiritual gift. “I love teaching others to use their gift. When I can make a connection with others, performer or listener, that touches the inner self, I feel my deepest joy.”
A special Coffee Hour to honor Jane after the 10 a.m. service will be held in the church’s Fellowship Hall. All are welcome to join this celebration in recognition of her many gifts to the community.
The Second Congregational Church, UCC is located at 51 Main St. in Newcastle. Regular Sunday services begin at 10 a.m.
