Edgecomb 250th Celebration at Edgecomb Community Church
A small crowd of about 40 gathered at the Edgecomb Community Church on Sunday, July 14, for a special service honoring Edgecomb’s 250th Anniversary. The service was officiated by their newly hired pastor Aram Mitchell. The sermon was centered around the scripture Ecclesiasticus 44:1-15, whereby we should celebrate our ancestors who helped us pave the way to today and our future. “We look back, so that we can better make out way forward,” stated Mitchell.
Several members dressed in period costumes. Jeff Sewall, a descendant of one of the church’s early clerks, read the original petition sent to the Commonwealth of Massachusetts to incorporate the plantation of Freetown and Jeremisquam Island so that a school and house of worship could be built and supported by the landowners of said plantation. In those early days of settling this land a preacher could not be hired until there had been an incorporated town.
Special music was played by pianist Joseph Cough of Waldoboro including a piece he wrote titled “Edgecomb.” A small choir performed an anthem “Sent Forth By God’s Blessing.”
Following the service an ice cream social was offered downstairs in the church’s parish hall. A great day for all as many gathered with old and new friends and neighbors.
Edgecomb Community Church welcomes all to join them each Sunday morning at 9:30 a.m. for an inspiring sermon in a friendly atmosphere followed by a coffee hour downstairs in Fellowship Hall.
