The man convicted of assaulting a former state trooper was sentenced October 30 in West Bath to a quarter of a year in jail.

William Harrison was sentenced to three months in county jail in the West Bath District Court a month and a half after first being convicted of assault against the man who sexually assaulted his young relative.

The maximum he could have faced for simple assault was 364 days in jail. Instead, he will serve his three months at Two Bridges Regional Jail.

Harrison was found guilty of simple assault September 18 after a three-day trial in Bath. His conviction stems from a 2012 assault in which he struck Gregory Vrooman several times in the face in Lincoln County Superior Court while Vrooman was on trial.

Vrooman, who is currently serving out a jail sentence at a Maine State Prison, was found guilty of four counts each of unlawful sexual contact, unlawful sexual touching and assault against Harrison's young relative, who was between 12 and 13 at the time of the assaults.

As he sat waiting to hear the verdict, Vrooman was punched in the face by Harrison, before Harrison was wrested to the floor by Lincoln County Sheriff’s deputies.

Originally, the state of Maine had tried to charge Harrison with aggravated assault, a felony, but the jury found him not guilty of that charge. Instead, Harrison was found guilty of simple assault, which the state added as an attachment.

The maximum sentence for a felony assault charge would have been up to 10 years in prison.
