Copper thefts result in deferred sentence for Boothbay Harbor man
Boothbay Harbor's Gregory Middendorf, 36, pleaded guilty to one count of Class D theft, two counts of Class E theft, two counts of criminal mischief and one count one aggravated criminal mischief after stealing copper piping from several harbor businesses.
As part of Middendorf's guilty plea, he will have a two-year deferred sentence, but must repay $7,642.39 in restitution and continue with substance abuse counseling.
Middendorf was arrested in May 2013 after Boothbay Harbor Police investigated copper thefts in April 2013.
Officers responded to thefts at Rocktide Inn, Boothbay Harbor Shipyard, Linekin Bay Resort, The Chowder House and the Romar Bowling Lanes.
Because of the extent of the damage, and because it affected potential hazardous gas tanks, Middendorf was charged with criminal mischief.
If Middendorf meets the terms of the deferred disposition, after two years his guilty plea will be withdrawn and he can plead to misdemeanor crimes and serve three weeks in jail.
