Night fire strikes Wiscasset home
An electrical problem in the basement started a house fire in Wiscasset the night of April 29, Wiscasset Fire Chief T.J. Merry said.
The State Fire Marshal’s Office made that finding and determined the fire was accidental, Merry said on April 30. The fire destroyed much of the home at 807 Gardiner Road; Merry named the owner as John Mclaren Sr.
The main portion of the vacant, cape-style home was a total loss, Assistant Fire Chief Nick Merry said at the scene Tuesday night; an addition appeared to sustain less damage, he said.
Fire crews from Edgecomb, Alna, Westport Island, Woolwich, Dresden and Newcastle aided the Wiscasset Fire Department. Wiscasset police and Wiscasset Emergency Medical Services personnel also helped at the scene. No one was hurt.
The fire was reported at about 9:30 p.m. The home’s double-roof added to the difficulty of fighting it, Assistant Chief Merry said.
Gardiner Road, or Route 27, was closed to traffic near the scene for more than three hours.
