Two-year arson investigation in Waldoboro leads to arrests
WALDOBORO — Maine’s Fire Marshal's Office arrested three men June 20 in connection with a fire two years ago that destroyed a boat house and a lobster boat inside the building.
On June 21, 2012, at approximately 10 p.m., a structure fire was reported to the Waldoboro Fire Department, at 3600 Friendship Road.
The fire involved a large Quonset hut boathouse owned by Donald Simmons, a lobster fisherman, according to a news release from the Maine Department of Public Safety.
Stored inside the boathouse was a 36-foot Wayne Beal fiberglass lobster boat owned by Danny Reed, Jr., of Friendship. Both the boathouse and the lobster boat were destroyed in the fire. Damage estimates reached $200,000, the state said. No one was injured.
Investigators with the State Fire Marshal's Office conducted a scene examination and determined the cause of the fire was arson. For almost two years, Fire Marshal investigators and the Maine Marine Patrol conducted dozens of interviews, served a number of search warrants, and collected evidence.
Last week, the Fire Marshal's Office and Maine Marine Patrol presented the case to the Lincoln County District Attorney's Office, which authorized three arrests. Charged today were James Simmons, 39, of Friendship; Frederick Campbell, 30, of Friendship; and Jeffrey Luce, 36, of Whitefield. Each were charged on one count of arson, a Class A felony, said Public Safety spokesman Steve McCausland. Class A crimes are punishable by up to 30 years in prison and a fine of up to $50,000.
Luce was currently in Two Bridges Jail on unrelated charges, the release said. Simmons and Campbell were arrested without incident in Rockland and transported by Fire Marshal Investigators to the Two Bridges Jail in Wiscasset. Bail for Simmons and Campbell was set at $50,000 each.
Assisting in the investigation were State Police, Knox County Sheriff's Department, Waldoboro Fire Department, Friendship Fire Department, Waldoboro Police Department, Rockland Police Department, Maine Drug Enforcement Agency, Maine Warden Service, and the FBI.
