Authorities identify Whitefield teen killed in ATV-car crash
Authorities have released the name of the Whitefield teen who died of injuries he received June 23 when the ATV he was on on Howe Road collided with a car. Lincoln County Sheriff’s Major Ken Mason on June 24 identified Ryan Mullens as the person who died following Monday’s crash.
Sheriff’s officials have said the northbound ATV collided with a northbound Subaru station wagon after the ATV had gone into the southbound lane to overtake the car; as the ATV re-entered the northbound lane it crossed the car’s path and the two vehicles collided on the side of the roadway, according to a sheriff’s office press release.
The 16-year-old South China girl driving the car was not injured, according to the release.
Wiscasset High School Principal Deb Taylor confirmed on June 25 that Mullens was a WHS student.
“He loved all kinds of outdoor activities and often spoke fondly to staff about his experiences with family and friends in the out-of-doors,” Taylor writes in an email response to the Wiscasset Newspaper. “It is tremendously sad to lose a member of our school community at such a young age, and our hearts go out to Ryan’s family during this difficult time.”
The investigation into the accident is continuing, Mason states in a June 25 email to the Wiscasset Newspaper.
Sheriff’s Sgt. Jason Nein was reconstructing the accident, according to the prior press release. Deputy First Class Mark Bridgham was the primary investigating officer, aided by Sgt. Daniel Sceviour. The Whitefield Fire Department responded to the scene. Howe Road was closed to through-traffic for about three hours, the release states.
