Family travels from China to give birth at LincolnHealth
For Timea Hajdu and Edward Eichler, having their second child at the Miles Campus of LincolnHealth was worth a trip halfway around the world.
Timea gave birth to David at 10:30 a.m. on Sept. 28. It was her second delivery at LincolnHealth and second with both Lincoln Medical Partners Nurse Midwife Bridget Buck and Obstetrics Nurse Candace Crocker, RN. And for Timea, it was worth the trip from GuangDong, China, where Edward, a member of the U.S. Foreign Service, serves in the U.S. Consulate, said Timea.
“Everyone is always so nice and loving and so supportive,” said Timea. “It is like coming home.”
Their first son, Tommy, now three, arrived when they were living in Wiscasset, where Edward’s parents live.
Timea heard very positive things about Lincoln Medical Partners Nurse Midwife Bridget Buck from a friend who had given birth to her two children at LincolnHealth. She also liked the hospital’s supportive attitude toward the natural birth process.
“I was very excited about giving birth with midwives. I wanted it to be as natural as possible and I really like the hospital’s philosophy,” she said.
When Tommy was born, Buck was very supportive and experienced as she guided Timea through the birth process and Edward liked the way she included him. Crocker, who was the instructor for the couple’s childbirth class, was also present.
“They were open to my birth plan and allowed me to give birth the way it was the most comfortable. I will never forget what Bridget told me when I was in labor with my first son: ‘Your body knows how to give birth.’”
So when it was time to have their second child, it was an easy decision to come back to LincolnHealth, said Timea.
Timea flew to Maine to stay with Edward’s parents several weeks before her due date because women are restricted from flying on some airlines after their 35th week of pregnancy. Edward arrived in Portland less than 48 hours before Timea went into labor.
Buck came in on her day off to help with the birth.
“It was really amazing that she came in. It gave me so much strength that I knew she was on her way,” said Timea. “She is so knowledgeable and so reassuring.”
Crocker was also on duty when David arrived. When it was time to go home, she helped them relearn how to adjust the car seat for their new baby.
“I trust Bridget and Candace. The fact that I could deliver my second baby with them was a huge emotional support since you bond with the people who are there when you give birth. My husband could also be there, which meant a lot to me,” said Timea.
“Everyone was super helpful and kind to us. I feel grateful for Bridget, Candace as well as Stacey (Rees), the midwife who was supporting us before Bridget got there, and all the other nurses. They took such wonderful care of us! With them we would do it again.”
