DaPonte announces its 'Summer Season Series I and II’
The DaPonte String Quartet launches its 25th Summer Season with Series I, “Clarinet Envy,” a pair of classic clarinet quintets featuring guest artist Mark Dover, from July 6-13 in Tenants Harbor, South Bristol, Harpswell, and the Coastal Maine Botanical Gardens in Boothbay.
Series I consists of Mozart’s “Quintet in A Major” and Brahms’s “Quintet in B Minor Op. 115.” Clarinetist Mark Dover, a member of Grammy-nominated Imani Winds, calls these quintets “two of the greatest chamber works ever composed." Both pieces were written at the peak of the composers' power, and Dover says clarinetists are “deeply thankful to have these two masterpieces in our repertoire.”
Performances of “Clarinet Envy” are at 7:30 p.m. and tickets are $25. Here are the dates and locations: July 6 - Ocean View Grange Hall, 435 Port Clyde Rd., Tenants Harbor; July 7 - Union Church, Middle Rd., So. Bristol; July 12 - Centennial Hall, 936 Harpswell Neck Rd., Harpswell; July 13 - Visitor Center at Coastal Maine Botanical Gardens, 132 Botanical Gardens Drive, Boothbay.
Series II, “Then and Now,” features a world premier commissioned by the DaPonte String Quartet and works by Bach and Mendelssohn to be performed from July 23-Aug. 13 at the same four locations and Stonington, Richmond and Chebeague Island.
Series II features the world premier of Dutch-born composer Rocco Havelaar’s “Quartet No. 3,” J.S. Bach’s “Three Contrapuncti” from “The Art of Fugue,” and Mendelssohn’s “Quartet in F Minor Op. 80.” Written toward the end of his life, “The Art of Fugue” is the culmination of Bach's experimentation with monothematic instrumental works. Mendelssohn’s quartet was an homage to his sister Fanny, a gifted composer in her own right. Havelaar says his work is inspired by Brahms and Beethoven.
