Phyllis P. Cook
Phyllis Pinkham Cook, 96, of Southport died Aug. 11, 2016 at home.
She was born in 1920 at Southport, the fourth daughter of Charles E. and Izetta Brewer Pinkham. She graduated from Boothbay Harbor High School and from Northeastern Business College.
During World War II, she worked at the Navy Department in Washington, D.C. On Dec. 26, 1941, she married Fred Hollie Cook of Pineville, West Virginia. After his discharge from the Marine Corps in 1947, they moved to Southport to live and bring up two children. Upon her father’s and mother’s retirement, they took over the running of Pinkham’s Store. After the sale of the store in 1970, Phyllis joined her sister’s real estate business. Upon her sister’s retirement, she purchased Ethelyn P. Giles Inc. real estate and ran it until her eyesight failed, at which time she sold the business.
Phyllis was active in town affairs, serving on the Southport Budget Committee, Board of Appeals, Planning Board and, until the time of her death, was a trustee of the Hendricks Hill Museum. She was a member and a longtime trustee of the Southport United Methodist Church. For many years, she was active in the Democratic party in the town of Southport and Lincoln County.
She was predeceased by her husband, Fred, in 1968, by her daughter, Deborah, in 1987, and by her sisters, Ethelyn Giles, Harriet Orchard and Eleanor Hainer.
Her survivors include: her son, Frederick Dale Cook and his wife, Melissa, of Bar Harbor; seven grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.
Per Phyllis’ request, there will be no service. In remembrance of Phyllis, stop by at Moody’s Diner and have a piece of pie.
