Tapestry Singers looking for more voices

The Damariscotta/Newcastle region’s community chorus, Tapestry Singers, has openings for tenors and basses for the fall season. Tapestry is a lively group that performs classical choral music under the direction of Beth Preston, Lincoln Academy music instructor. Their concerts offer an eclectic repertoire of choral music, woven into a themed program that touches the hearts of their audiences.
Preston is known for introducing singers and audiences to choral music of modern composers such as Ola Gjeilo, and Stephen Paulus, and Ysaye Barnwell, as well as including some of the beloved old chestnuts.
The group holds regular rehearsals on Monday nights from 6:30-8:30 p.m. on the campus of Lincoln Academy.
“Our rehearsals are hard work, but fun-filled. If I go in tired, I come out energized,” says Rosie Bensen, alto.
The first rehearsal of the fall semester is on Sept. 12. The choir will begin preparation for their “Woven in Song” concerts on Dec. 17 and 18 that will include carols with Celtic-style accompaniment, newly arranged by Robert Taylor and Susan Conant.
There is an informal audition to check voice range and music reading skills. “Some of the music is advanced, so our singers need to commit to learning their part using the practice tracks provided,” says Preston. Tapestry welcomes all adult singers, whether amateur or professional and high school students who are recommended by their choral directors. The chorus truly is a tapestry, a closely-woven community of people who care about each other and who love to sing.
