River Arts is pleased to announce the opening reception for its newest exhibition “Small Works” on Friday, Nov. 18 from 5-7 p.m. The public is welcome to attend the reception for this beautiful new show featuring the work of 82 Maine artists.

Juror Robyn Holman has curated hundreds of art exhibitions in all media for over 35 years, including traveling exhibitions, art auctions, and history exhibitions, with a special interest in topics that blend art and science.

Of the “Small Works” exhibition Holman said, “ … the resulting exhibit comes through with a remarkable range of techniques, subject matter, and representation–all staying within the concept of 'small.' Besides the invitation to view pieces up close – a more intimate relationship with the image – small works are easily sited in a home and are affordable.”

A few highlights from this exhibit include Jan Dearborn's “Sparrow,” is a gem in the collection of 150 works. In its frame, it is small enough to be held in the palm of your hand, as if holding the real thing. The brushwork is loose and expressive, with the little bird confidently filling its tiny space.

Two pieces by Cynthia Smith, are bas-relief, a format that bridges 2-dimensional and 3-dimensional forms. “Still Waters,” with a luscious lead-gray surface, has fish and underwater vegetation sculpted into perfect composition.

Janet Percival's wool mittens are an unexpected and delightful addition to the exhibit with their curly wooly backs, inspired by the joyous characteristics of natural wool.

Vale Burns' work shows us textile art at its highest, merging images inspired and interpreted from science with an amazing ability to draw with thread. All three small works are done on a muted, sheened pink fabric. “No. 4 Brain” is a cross section, sporting beautiful French knots in the cerebellum. “No. 5 Multipolar Neurons,” is another stellar piece - and you don't even have to know what a multipolar neuron is to marvel at it.

Carolyn Gabbe's small quietly elegant still life of vintage Christmas ornaments is another outstanding example traditional still life painting.

River Arts is located at 241 U.S. Route 1 in Damariscotta. Gallery hours are Tuesday through Saturday 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. and Sunday 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.
