‘Crossing to Avalon’: The tapestries of George Mason
George Mason has a background in ceramic architectural tile and his work is steeped in the exploration of materials and history. Richly textured and saturated with color, the largest of his “relief” tapestries are pieced together panels that occupy entire walls.
See Mason’s tapestries of the “Crossing to Avalon” show at The Press Hotel, 119 Exchange Street, Portland, Jan. 20 through March 4. An opening reception will be held Thursday, Feb. 2 from 6-8 p.m. The gallery is located in the lower level of the hotel.
The Nobleboro-based artist began to combine encaustics with layered paper cut outs while teaching in Jerusalem, Indonesia, and India. Eventually these multi-faceted works led to a multi-faceted question that challenged the artist to synthesize several divergent interests. He asked, is it possible to create large dimensional works, outside the frame and highly textural, that hang with authority yet surrender to gravity with grace and dignity?
