'Amadeus': Live broadcast from London
Lincoln Theater in downtown Damariscotta is thrilled that Peter Shaffer’s “Amadeus,” a current smash and almost sold out hit, will screen live from the National Theatre in London at 2 p.m. on Thursday, Feb. 2 with a rebroadcast at 7 that evening.
Music. Power. Jealousy. The production is opulent, larger-than-life, excessive and vibrant – an exciting new revival of the traditional play which became the famous Academy Award-winning film of the same name.
Lucian Msamati (Luther, Game of Thrones, NT Live: The Comedy of Errors) plays Salieri in Peter Shaffer’s iconic play, which includes live orchestral accompaniment by Southbank Sinfonia, a 20-piece orchestra, playing live on-stage throughout the play, along with six opera singers who perform excerpts from operas such as “The Magic Flute,” “Don Giovanni” and “The Marriage of Figaro.” Both orchestra and vocalists are fully integrated into the action and bring Mozart’s music to life.
You don’t need to know classical music to be engrossed in this story. While based around one of the world’s most famous composers, it’s highly accessible. Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart, a rowdy young prodigy, arrives in Vienna, the music capital of the world – and he’s determined to make a splash. Awestruck by his genius, court composer Antonio Salieri has the power to promote his talent or destroy his name. Seized by obsessive jealousy he begins a war with Mozart, with music, and ultimately, with God.
Tickets, available one hour before showtime, are $15 Adult, $13 Lincoln Theater members and $5 for youth 18 -12 (no youth under 12, please). Tickets may be purchased in advance through the theater office at 2 Theater Street or by calling 207-563-3424.
Music. Power. Jealousy. Such fun.
