The Center for Teaching and Learning, a K-8 demonstration school in Edgecomb, welcomed a group of teacher-interns from all over the country and the world. For 26 years, teachers have visited Edgecomb for a week at a time to observe methods developed by CTL’s faculty and adapt them to their own classrooms and schools.  The past week’s interns included teachers from schools in Australia, Colorado, Michigan, New York and West Virginia; next week’s will include visitors from schools in Kentucky, Massachusetts, Maine and South Carolina.

Although not a charter school, CTL accomplishes what charter schools were conceived to do – innovate, and then pass along successful methods to teachers in public school classrooms. Faculty members experiment thoughtfully, write books and give presentations, are featured in educational DVD’s about CTL’s programs, and demonstrate their methods in person to the visiting teachers.

More than 600 teachers from 40 states, Washington, D.C., Australia, Brazil, Canada, Ecuador, England, India, Japan, the Philippines, Taiwan and Uganda have participated so far in the CTL intern program.  Only classroom teachers may apply; the fee they pay helps underwrite tuition assistance for CTL students.
