Susan Parrish Carter uses a variety of techniques to capture the glow of color in nature. Rather than waiting for the perfect moment, more interesting images come from a fast glimpse, a memorable impression that cannot be collected by a camera or sketchpad. Painting allows Susan to record her memories of glimpses. In her paintings of Maine architecture, a building is not just the sticks and stones of a structure that provides a function, but its environment: the road flowing by, the shadows of nearby trees, the clouds in the sky. Vignettes of intimate and mundane domestic artifacts and locations are the basis of Susan’s “Kitchen Art” series. These pictures are not glimpses but studies of specific objects. They are images of light, reflection, and translucency represented by the most familiar of objects, common household goods, and moments within an every-day home.

 

Anne Cronin is a native of Maine and lives in Rockland. Finding inspiration in the natural world around her, Anne’s watercolors and ink drawings are of the landscapes and gardens of Maine and southern California. Anne is an inspiration to her friends and fellow artists due to her determination to return to painting while recovering from a stroke affecting her dominant side. Adapting to her disability has given her a fresh approach to her work.

 

“I try to capture the beauty and character of nature by creating paintings and drawings that show the softness and tranquility of the world,” said Cronin. “Using the medium of watercolor, I can create more of an impression of a scene than of exacting detail, and use its natural flow to help build the completed work. Light plays a tremendous role in my work. I enjoy observing how the light and shadows play on the landscapes, trees, and flowers, bringing that fascinating dynamic into my paintings. Whenever I can, I spend time outdoors working en plein air which allows me to get closer to the subject and really see the colors and textures. I am quite inspired by what I find — driftwood by the shore, grasses and ferns at the edge of the woods, leaves scattered across a stream.”
