BRHS students honor Parkland shooting victims
At 10 a.m. Thursday, March 15 – a month and a day after the shootings at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School in Parkland, Florida – over 30 Boothbay Region High School students emerged from the school to honor the 17 students and teachers killed.
Lilly Sherburne, Summer Chamberlin and Page Brown spoke on the purpose of the walkout, one of many across the nation.
Sherburne said the purpose was not to debate political matters, but to remember those killed in Parkland and in every act of school violence.
“Today we stand in solidarity and commemoration,” said Sherburne. “These 17 minutes stand for each life lost in the tragic shooting that occurred one month ago today.”
“Lost were students, teachers, friends – people – the same as all of us who woke up that morning with plans to attend school, practice, work, band, and to go home to their families that night for dinner,” Chamberlin continued.
Brown said every name would be read along with a short biography. “Giving these people’s lives recognition is a way for us to use our voices for those who cannot.”
Students took turns reading the slain students’ names. English teacher Mark Gorey and art teacher Manon Lewis read the names of two adults killed. Those slain in Parkland were Alyssa Alhadeff, 14; Scott Beigel, 35, geography teacher; Martin Duque Anguiano, 14; Nicholas Dworet, 17; Aaron Feis, 37, assistant football coach; Jaime Guttenberg, 14; Chris Hixon, 49, athletic director; Luke Hoyer, 15; Cara Loughran, 14; Gina Montalto, 14; Joaquin Oliver, 17; Alaina Petty, 14; Meadow Pollack, 18; Helena Ramsay, 17; Alex Schachter, 14; Carmen Schentrup, 16; and Peter Wang, 15.
