2016: An election year to remember
Scandalous. Unbelievable. Disgusting. Embarrassing. Ever-changing. And yes, sometimes amusing. These are just a few of the hundreds of words — we’re sure you have plenty of your own — which could be used to describe the 2016 election campaigns and, with only a few days to go, there may still be more surprises in store for us.
We understand that over the past couple of hundred years, there have been some contentious campaigns on the national level, but we think it’s safe to say this one will long be remembered.Supporters in both parties have been fired up one day only to be disappointedthe next, and it appears many voters would like to find a “none of the above’’ option on the ballot this year.
Both major parties have been fighting hard for critical seats in the House and Senate, and the commercials have in our opinion been very negative, with very little focus on their different views on major issues. We’re so sick of them that we’ve found ourselves immediately grabbing the remote and changing channels — any channel would do — until we were sure the ad was over.
It’s been obvious that voters wanted a change this year and the two major candidates offered the option of a first-ever woman president or a businessman with no political experience. They’ve been throwing jabs at each other for weeks and we’re all anxious for November 8 to get here. Some of us even chose to vote early; as of last week, over 20 million had already cast their absentee ballots and we’re sure that number has gone up substantially since then. By all predictions, we’re going to see a record turnout, which is good.
No matter what the outcome, the 2016 presidential election has been memorable, which the dictionary defines as worth remembering or easily remembered because of being special or unusual. We think that pretty much sums it up, wouldn’t you say?
