And then there were none
Wiscasset’s second police cruiser is out of commission owing to a crash that occurred Sunday night on Bath Road at the turnoff to Two Bridges Regional Jail.
Officer James Read, who was driving in the May 22 crash, was not injured; nor was the driver in the other vehicle. An investigation is under way, said new Police Chief Jeff Lange, and no citations have been issued.
This is the second crash involving a Wiscasset police cruiser in a little more than a month. On April 14, the other police cruiser was totaled in a crash near the Irving gas station on Route One. Sergeant Alfred Simmons was driving that vehicle when a car driven by Yeshi Khendrup of El Cerrito, California, pulled out into the cruiser’s path. Simmons was treated for minor injuries at Miles Hospital. Khendrup reported no injuries, but was cited for failing to yield the right of way.
Lange was not certain that the cruiser in Sunday night’s crash was totaled. “It is being evaluated,” he said. He added that the town is insured through Maine Municipal Association.
For now, the department is using a car on loan from the Paris, Maine police department, where Lange was recently interim chief, and is borrowing a vehicle from the Lincoln County Sheriff’s Office.
“My first order of business as chief is to make sure we have the vehicles we need,” Lange said with a smile.
