Blockbuster action-adventure summer on the way
While the Harbor Theater is known for its range and variety of film offerings from the classics to the arts to indie films and documentaries, when summer hits there’s nothing like a run of blockbuster action-adventure movies! In June and July, that’s just what’s coming!
“Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse” jump-starts the thrills on June 2nd. After reuniting with Gwen Stacy, Brooklyn's full-time, friendly neighborhood Spider-Man is catapulted across the Multiverse, where he encounters a team of Spider-People charged with protecting its very existence. However, when the heroes clash on how to handle a new threat, Miles finds himself pitted against the other Spiders. He must soon redefine what it means to be a hero so he can save the people he loves most.
Then, who could miss the third and (supposedly) final in the Guardians of the Galaxy series from Marvel on June 16? Running for only one week, June 16 – 22, “Guardians of the Galaxy 3” will be more fun than a barrel of aliens.
“The gang’s all back together, with a focus this time on Rocket Raccoon (Bradley Cooper) and his mysterious origins, and on Peter Quill (Chris Pratt) angsting over his lost lover Gamora (Zoe Saldaña) and her alternate-timeline replacement who doesn’t love him. Expect Vin Diesel to say “I am Groot” a bunch, and for Dave Bautista to steal every scene he’s in.” —Tasha Robinson, Polygon.com
Next up: “Fast X” on June 23. Over many missions and against impossible odds, Dom Toretto (Vin Diesel) and his family have outsmarted, out-nerved and outdriven every foe in their path. Now, they confront the most lethal opponent they've ever faced: A terrifying threat emerging from the shadows of the past who's fueled by blood revenge, and who is determined to shatter this family and destroy everything--and everyone--that Dom loves, forever.
“There are some who might dismiss more Fast films as summer blockbuster schlock. But those in the family know: they rip!” When “Fast X” opens in the Harbor on June 23 for one week, it “promises to be a high-octane thrill romp through streets and highways around the world. Everyone is invited to tag along for the ride, and we can (and should). There’s nothing in here to dismiss really; when you’re here, you’re family.” —Zosha Millman, Polygon.com
“Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny” premiers nationwide and at the Harbor Theater on June 30. Daredevil archaeologist Indiana Jones races against time to retrieve a legendary dial that can change the course of history. Accompanied by his goddaughter, he soon finds himself squaring off against Jürgen Voller, a former Nazi who works for NASA.
Then, topping it all off comes “Mission: Impossible – Dead Reckoning Part One” opening on July 14. The Mission Impossible movie franchise has been running since the late ’90s, but this is the third collaboration between Tom Cruise and writer and director Christopher McQuarrie, who seems to become the star’s most trusted partner (he also worked with Cruise on Top Gun: Maverick). Dead Reckoning Part 1 picks up the story shortly after the last movie, 2018’s Mission Impossible: Fallout, with a story concluding in Part 2, which will supposedly come out in 2024.
So, come on ladies and gentlemen. Gather up the family and bring along the summer guests, let down your hair and get a move on. It’s time to ride the thrills on the big screen this summer!
