Road construction projects, especially on a main thoroughfare such as Route 27, are a pain to motorists. Long waits, driving on uneven pavement and impatient drivers drive up the stress. Some planning may be involved to avoid the current construction project at Boothbay Center – but for the people who live and work in the area and have to deal with the wait, we feel for you.

Those who live in the region know the back route from the north to getting to the high school, YMCA, Hannaford and areas south (downtown Boothbay Harbor). For those who don’t, take Hardwick Road in Boothbay, turn right onto Pension Ridge, follow that to Back Narrows Road, and take Back Narrows Road to Route 96 in Boothbay Harbor. From there you can get to Ocean Point, Southport, etc. A little longer route but you probably won’t have to wait.

Fran Nicoletta, who lives on Route 27 in North Boothbay, suggested that residents of the “escape route” set up a big yard sale during the construction. Might make some money.

I live on Back Narrows Road and since Monday, I have noticed that traffic heading north and south has increased. Taking my dog out for a walk after work on Monday, I had to wait to cross the road while six to eight cars passed by. That doesn’t happen often.

Hopefully the good weather will continue and the construction can proceed at a good pace. In the meantime, think of Houston and Florida while you’re waiting in line. It may help you deal with the stress a bit better. Be glad you don’t live in those hurricane-stricken areas.

One other thing while you’re driving along the “escape route” – deer and other critters (skunks, porcupines, raccoons, etc.) can be seen daily coming out of the woods, so be on the lookout. Also, please drive the speed limits on those roads as those who live in the neighborhood like to walk, walk our dogs, jog (not me!) and ride bikes along the side of the roads.
