Children and Christmas
With Christmas behind us (just barely) we all turn our attention to getting the budget back on track and accepting the realization that winter is really upon us here in Maine.
We hope Christmas was an enjoyable holiday for all of you. We’re especially envious of those with young family members or friends, because in our opinion there’s something about the holiday which almost demands the presence of children.
We feel it when we attend a school or church program featuring boys and girls in the lower grades. They bring smiles to everyone in the audience.
Guaranteeing that children have a memorable Christmas can take many forms from providing gifts to those left homeless because of fire to families who have fallen on hard times and just can’t afford presents.Christmas is a special time for youngsters and, thanks to thousands of Santa’s helpers all across the country, there’s an all-out effort to put smiles on the faces of youngsters everywhere. It’s especially true of those suffering from debilitating illnesses that need all the cheer and happiness we can give them.
Watching wide-eyed children open their presents Christmas morning is special, indeed. Many families no longer have young ones in the fold, and while exchanging gifts is enjoyable, somehow there’s something missing when there are no youngsters around. Fortunately, during the holiday season there are many activities in our community where folks can enjoy being around our wonderful, wide-eyed children. It gives everyone an opportunity to share the undeniable Christmas spirit that only young people can generate.
As we move into the new year, we should all remember that while children make Christmas special, they represent our future, and we shouldn’t forget them the rest of the year. Many of them right here in our own community, as well as across the country and throughout the world, have needs which aren’t being met. If we can help in any way to make their future a bit brighter, we have an obligation to do so.
