Crews free Edgecomb man trapped under farm equipment
A 54-year-old Edgecomb man remained at a Portland hospital following a farm equipment accident Sunday afternoon, Edgecomb Fire Chief Roy Potter said.
Jim Schmal became trapped with both legs pinned between a tractor and a back hoe attachment at 165 McKay Road, Potter said.
Edgecomb Fire Department, Edgecomb First Responders, the Lincoln County Sheriff’s Office and Wiscasset Ambulance Service responded; Boothbay Fire Department was also called for additional manpower and equipment, and Boothbay Region Ambulance Service was called for a paramedic to come to the scene.
Crews cut the cab off the tractor and used hydraulic spreaders to free Schmal; deep mud added to the difficulty of the rescue effort, Potter, who is Schmal’s cousin, said Sunday night.
“Without the help from Boothbay, we would have been there a lot longer,” Potter said.
Wiscasset Ambulance Service took Schmal to Miles Memorial Hospital in Damariscotta where he was stabilized, then he was taken on to Maine Medical Center in Portland.
Schmal was conscious at the scene, Potter said. No further information was immediately available on Schmal’s condition.
