Damariscotta to consider chasing after parking fines
Delinquent parking ticket holders: The law may be coming for you.
At least if the town of Damariscotta approves hiring a collection agency to pursue delinquent parking tickets.
That's what the board was set to consider during its Wednesday, Dec. 2 regular meeting.
According to Town Manager Matt Lutkus' agenda notes, the town is considering hiring Advanced Collection Services to collect due parking fines. Lutkus noted in his report that while most fines are paid, there are a number of unpaid parking fines.
The police department has records of delinquent parking fines dating back to 2010 and by pursuing the motorists who didn't pay, it would strengthen the town's enforcement efforts, Lutkus noted. Not only would the town get the dues it is owed, but it would also boost motorists' willingness to pay the fine, Lutkus noted.
Most of the unpaid fines are reportedly from out-of-state motorists.
The board of selectmen was expected to be asked to approve a contract with Advanced Collection Services to pursue those unpaid tickets. The business would reportedly seek 35 percent of all repaid fines as commission.
Lutkus noted that the collection agency would only seek repayment of fines more than six months overdue and only after the Damariscotta Police Department has issued a pair of warnings.
The town heavily enforces parking in all of its parking lots during the summer months and along Main Street year-round.
The meeting will be at 5:30 p.m. at the town office on School Street.
