DOT truck rear-ends, pushes car in Edgecomb; two hurt
The driver of a northbound car on Route 27 received a concussion Friday afternoon when a Maine Department of Transportation truck struck the car from behind, a Lincoln County sheriff’s official said Saturday.
The car’s driver, David Simpson, 43, of Scarborough did not appear to have been wearing a seat belt when the crash happened near Eddy Road, Lt. Rand Maker said. Simpson and a 17-year-old male passenger in the 2000 Nissan Maxima were taken by Wiscasset Ambulance Service to Mid Coast Hospital in Brunswick, where they were treated and released, Maker said. The teen had complained of back and shoulder pain.
The DOT truck’s driver, Zachery Gilbert, 20, of Newcastle was not hurt; the truck, a 2007 International, received minimal damage when its plow gear struck the back of the Maxima; the truck pushed the car a short distance; then the car crossed the southbound side of Route 27 and came to rest against a utility pole, Maker said. The truck was northbound behind the Maxima when the car slowed to turn onto Eddy Road and the crash occurred, Maker said.
The truck following too closely was likely a contributing factor, Maker said. No tickets or charges were anticipated.
Gilbert and the teen in the car were wearing seat belts.
Emergency workers were able to keep one lane of Route 27 open throughout the cleanup; One end of Eddy Road closed briefly, Edgecomb Fire Chief Roy Potter said Friday.
In addition to the fire department, the sheriff’s office, and Wiscasset Ambulance Service, a Maine State trooper and the Maine State Police’s commercial vehicles unit responded to the scene. Maker said he requested the commercial vehicles unit to examine the dump truck. At this point there is no indication of a mechanical problem, Maker said.
