Dresden man arrested for alleged theft
A Dresden man has been arrested on a warrant after an alleged February incident that involved running away from a family member over bail money.
Stephen Leighton, 27, of Dresden was arrested on a warrant from a crime he was alleged to have committed in February.
According to Lincoln County Sheriff's Det. Terry Michaud's affidavit, he was alerted to a potential situation involving Leighton through a fellow deputy, who knew Leighton.
According to the affidavit, Leighton contacted a female relative on Feb. 16 and said he had been arrested and had a $220 bail. Leighton allegedly asked the relative to loan him the money to get out of Two Bridges Regional Jail, which she refused to do.
Leighton allegedly said he had the money, and that after being bailed out he would repay her. The victim reportedly agreed, and paid the $220 to bail out Leighton.
The victim then drove Leighton to his bank, according to report, in order to get the money. Leighton allegedly said he didn't have his wallet or ATM card, and that he would retrieve the items from his apartment.
The victim reportedly drove Leighton to his Randolph apartment, and once they were in Randolph, Leighton allegedly asked the victim to pull over. At that time, Leighton is alleged to have gotten out of the car, and then began walking away. After a short time, Leighton allegedly broke into a run, heading away from the victim.
The victim reportedly called the police, and while she was on the phone, Leighton allegedly called her and explained that he didn't the $220 needed for his bail and that it would take some time to retrieve it.
A warrant was issued for Leighton's arrest for one charge of misdemeanor theft by deception.
Leighton was arrested by Wiscasset Police Chief Troy Cline on Wednesday, June 30, on the warrant.
If convicted, Leighton could face up to six months in jail or up to a $1,000 fine, as theft by deception is a Class E crime.
Leighton was held on $500 cash bail at Two Bridges Regional Jail after his arrest. He will have an Aug. 27 court date.
