Drugs and assault lead to jail time for Edgecomb man
A local man who reportedly stole medications and assaulted a relative will serve five days of a 280-day sentence.
Dale J. Stone, 21, of Edgecomb pleaded guilty on July 8 at the Lincoln County Courthouse to one count of illegal possession of scheduled drugs and one count of domestic violence assault.
He was sentenced to 280 days in jail with all but five days suspended for two concurrent guilty pleas.
In the statement of probable cause, Lincoln County Sheriff's Detective Ronald Rollins wrote that Stone was suspected in the theft of Hydrocodone from an apartment in Boothbay Harbor on May 1.
Boothbay Harbor Police Officer Larry Brown was investigating the theft of the pills at the apartment and said he spoke with the victims and suspected Stone in the case.
Through the course of the investigation, Stone and Rollins reportedly found that Stone had allegedly stolen more than 150 pills and left them in Edgecomb.
Brown reportedly spoke with a relative of Stone's who confirmed she had the pills and claimed Stone reportedly came to her house in April and gave her the pills.
Brown took the pills and identified and counted them as 80 full pills and two half-pills of Furosmide and 75 pills of Gabapentin. According to the US National Library of Medicine, Gabapentin is a prescription used to treat seizures while Furosmide is used to treat high blood pressure and edema. Both are classified as schedule Z drugs, which includes prescription drugs and marijuana, among others, under Maine statute.
A warrant was eventually put out for Stone's arrest for two charges of Class E unlawful possession of scheduled drugs.
As part of his plea deal in that case, one count of unlawful possession was dismissed.
According to the arrest report from Lincoln County Sheriff's Deputy Ryan Chubbuck, Stone was arrested Tuesday, July 7 after receiving a call from a man in Edgecomb.
Chubbuck spoke with a man in Edgecomb, who is related to Stone. The victim claimed that Stone was locked out of the house, and that he kicked open the door to get back inside. When the door was kicked open, it reportedly swung and struck the man in the head hard enough to cause a cut.
Chubbuck then reportedly found Stone drunk in the woods near the Edgecomb house and placed him under arrest and charged him with violating the conditions of his release and Class D domestic violence assault. The violating his conditions of release stemmed from a part of his original bail conditions that he not commit any new crimes. The violating charge was dropped.
Stone will also have to pay $400 in fines and was court-ordered to undergo random searches for drugs and alcohol and to complete a substance abuse program. He will be on probation for a year and was ordered to have no contact with the assault victim.
