Final Grateful Dead concert to screen at Lincoln Theater
The four surviving members of the Grateful Dead launched their farewell mini-tour this past Saturday evening in northern California, where the legendary jam band got its start 50 years ago. The final show of the five concert tour will take place Sunday, July 5 in Chicago’s Soldier Field, where the Grateful Dead last played as a group before the death of the legendary Jerry Garcia, the group's lead guitarist-songwriter, in August 1995. It will be broadcast LIVE at Damariscotta’s Lincoln Theater.
The band's "core four'' — rhythm guitarist Bob Weir, bassist Phil Lesh and percussionists Mickey Hart and Bill Kreutzmann have recruited Phish front man Trey Anastasio as Garcia's stand-in on guitar and vocals. Keyboardists Bruce Hornsby and Jeff Chimenti, best known for his work with Weir's band RatDog, will round out the lineup.
Heavily steeped in Americana, the group had its roots in blues and bluegrass. Led by Garcia’s guitar, the Dead would delve into blues, folk, jazz R&B and avant-garde realms for hours on end.
Tickets at the Lincoln Theater are $10 (at the door only). Doors open at 7 p.m. The theater is located at 2 Theater Street. Visit www.atthelincoln.org for more information.
