Fire breaks out at Edgecomb development’s pool house
A malfunction in a pool heater is the probable cause of a Nov. 4 fire that damaged a pool house at Sheepcot Harbour Village & Resort, Edgecomb Fire Chief Roy Potter said Tuesday night.
Area fire departments quickly knocked down Tuesday afternoon’s fire at the building on Eddy Road. The cause was determined by fire officials investigating at the scene include a representative of the State Fire Marshal’s Office, Potter said.
The resort is located on Davis Island. The fire took place in the area known as “The View,” whose residents use the pool house. Smoke and flames were visible as of 1:12 p.m., but only smoke was coming from the charred hole in the roof as of 1:22 p.m.
The heater that malfunctioned was located in a large utility room that houses pumps and other equipment in the building’s upper level, Potter said.
A construction crew working on the property reported the fire, Potter said.
The building’s owner, Tony Casella, said in a phone interview from Massachusetts that a man who has been watching the pool house for him was working nearby at the time and saw smoke.
Casella said the worker turned off the building’s power, then went to the pool house’s pump room, where the water filtration system is located, and saw the fire there. Casella said the worker called 911.
Casella said those in the homeowners’ association use the pool house, but that no one was in the building at the time of the fire.
Firefighters from Wiscasset, Newcastle and Boothbay joined Edgecomb firefighters in the effort. The towns have a mutual aid agreement. The Lincoln County Sheriff’s Office helped with traffic on Eddy Road.
Neighboring homeowner Lowell Rogers praised firefighters’ response to Tuesday’s fire.
“Very impressive. The cooperation between the fire departments is good,” Rogers said at the scene. He called the pool house a beautiful facility. “It’s a darn shame,” he said of the fire.
The utility room received heavy fire damage and the building’s lower level received water damage. ”But they should be able to salvage (the building),” Potter said. He cited the other departments’ help with aiding in the fire’s quick knock-down. It was a good turnout of firefighters for a weekday, he added.
