The Gershwins’ ‘Porgy and Bess’ at the Strand
The 2019-2020 Metropolitan Opera’s Live-in-HD season of broadcasts from Lincoln Center to the Strand Theatre continues on Saturday, Feb. 1 at 1 p.m. with a simulcast of “Porgy and Bess,” a new Met production. An encore broadcast will be presented on Tuesday, Feb. 11 at 1 p.m.
The Gershwins’ modern American masterpiece has its first Met performances in almost three decades, starring bass-baritone Eric Owens and soprano Angel Blue in the title roles. Director James Robinson’s stylish production transports audiences to Catfish Row, a black neighborhood in Charleston, South Carolina, in the early 20th century. The setting is vibrant with the music, dancing, emotion, and heartbreak of its inhabitants.
“Porgy and Bess” premiered at the Alvin Theatre, New York, in 1935, and is considered the most ambitious work by one of the nation’s greatest musical talents.
