Go with the scarecrows
Sometimes in a brainstormed sea of ideas, one hits all the right notes, and none of the hitches. That seemed to be the case with one the Wiscasset Area Chamber of Commerce batted around Nov. 10. Others had potential, too, to be local or even regional draws, like the pleasant-sounding First Night on New Year’s Eve.
But the scarecrow theme was not as weather-dependent or as high on overhead as some; it also drew the most talk, and the most takers for a task force to explore it.
The early ideas for it included having scarecrows throughout town and related country-themed side events. Participants suggested that residents, businesses and school children be invited to make the scarecrows.
People have a good time at the one-day Scarecrow Festival that Parks & Rec already puts on. That’s where the scarecrows on the town office lawn every fall come from.
One meeting-goer said the picture-taking she saw a family doing with those scarecrows could happen all through town.
We agree, like the picture-taking around Pumpkinfest’s decorated pumpkins in Damariscotta. And no huge cost outlay of a Wings Over Wiscasset for plane acts. The side events would take still take volunteers and some sponsors. But even without them, the people stopping in Wiscasset to see and pose with the scarecrows might step into a store or two.
We can see the chamber or another nonprofit centering a fundraiser on the scarecrows: Don’t charge scarecrow entrants. They’ve donated their labor. Sell ballots to vote for scariest, funniest and most original. Keep the ballot fees and the prizes small. They could be largely glory titles.
Better yet, throw in a pie-baking contest, in keeping with the country theme: The winning scarecrow entrants get their pick of the pies.
A “Town of Scarecrows” event, similar to the “Village of Scarecrows” the Falmouth Village (Massachusetts) Association tells about at www.falmouthvillageassociation.com, could get the attention of a tourist in the Stephen King state, particularly in the time frame some suggested, from Columbus Day weekend through Halloween.
Those at the meeting clearly want the chamber, its members and the town to thrive. Let’s have a sense of humor with ourselves and try the scarecrow idea.
