Heller should be reelected to board
Dear Editor:
I am writing this letter in support of Terry Heller's re-election to the Select Board in Wiscasset.
Over the last two years, I have observed her persistence and creativity in solving difficult problems, and setting boundaries on proper processes in a respectful and direct way. In a current difficult neighborhood discussion on a workforce housing project, she worked hard to make sure that all opinions were heard, and she answered every question, even if the answer was "I don't know." It isn’t easy to take on challenging, complex issues, especially during an election period. One option when one is asked to address a problem is to let the issue take care of itself. Instead, I have seen her continue to make inquiries and take the time to talk and discuss with all sides of an issue, finding out exactly what her constituents' opinions are, and negotiating a solution that could work for everyone.
She also seeks to engage others in participating in democracy actively and directly. A few weeks ago when neighbors were unhappy with an outcome in our town, she said something like “This is a democracy. Make it work for you. If you think there should be an ordinance for this situation, then draft one, and submit it.” This attitude engages people to work actively with each other on finding solutions.
Terry Heller is fair and honest, and she works for everyone. She should be re-elected to the Wiscasset Select Board.
